Kids Bike Helmet or Kids Skate Helmet?

A kids bike helmet is the most important protection of all when your child starts to bike, skate or ride a scooter.

Even though kids skate helmets and kids bike helmets have in common to protect your head from getting hurt, there are some differences when it comes to safety that you need to know about before buying a kids helmet. In short, the differences can be described as the following:

  • Skate helmets are made to endure many small impacts without breaking, and
  • Bike helmets are made to protect you from one big impact, but breaks in the process

When having fun on a skateboard or on roller skates you have a higher risk of falling when compared to having fun on a bicycle. The distance you fall and the speed of the fall is often less when skating than it is on a bike. When looking at these facts it makes sense that kids skate helmets and kids bike helmets provide you with different kinds of safety and that the tests they go through therefore are different from each other. If a helmet only has been approved for skating but you choose to use it for biking purposes, it is reasonable to assume that you are less protected from a head injury than if you used a bike helmet.

There are some tests and certifications that approve helmets for both skating and biking, such as EN 1078. Many of our kid's skate helmets have this certificate, so if you are looking for a bike helmet that looks like a skate helmet, SkatePro is a good place to start looking.

How To Place a Kids Helmet Correctly?

In order to achieve the best possible protection, a good fit of kids bike helmets are essential. If your child shakes his/hers head a little and the helmet does not move, the fit should be good. Besides that, the straps of the helmet should form an Y right under the ear, without touching the ear.

All kids bike helmets come with foam pads for a better fit and comfort. Also, most helmets come with an adjustable closing system in the back to secure a proper fit.
