What Are BMX Bike Pegs Used For?
BMX bike pegs, also known as BMX stunt pegs, play a crucial role for freestyle riders eager to explore various tricks. These pegs affix to your wheel axles, allowing for up to four to be attached to your bike. Primarily associated with freestyle BMX, pegs facilitate common maneuvers like rail and ledge grinds, along with flatland stunts. When purchasing pegs, you'll encounter options in materials, axle sizes, lengths, and diameters.
Most BMX pegs are crafted to fit standard 10mm front wheel axles and 14mm rear axles, but it's always wise to confirm compatibility before making a purchase.
Metal vs. Plastic BMX Pegs: Which is Better?
The choice between metal and plastic pegs hinges on your intended usage. Metal pegs, typically fashioned from steel or aluminum, excel in durability, making them ideal for street BMX. Steel pegs are particularly robust, while aluminum offers a balance of strength and lightweight design.
Conversely, plastic BMX pegs are favored by park riders due to their smooth sliding action on metal surfaces. Rather than being completely made of plastic, "plastic peg" usually implies the usage of plastic peg sleeves.
Fitting and Removing BMX Pegs
Installing and uninstalling pegs is a straightforward process, requiring a socket spanner, deep-well socket, and Allen key. Begin by removing the washer and axle nut from the axle. Next, position the peg onto the wheel axle and thread the axle nut through the peg. Utilize a socket spanner to securely fasten both the peg and axle nut. To remove pegs, simply reverse the process, turning the socket spanner counterclockwise. Need a virtual helping hand? Watch our video guide on How to Install BMX Pegs!
Regularly rotating your pegs can prolong their lifespan, ensuring optimal performance over time.
